Native Plant Information Cards
To make the Earthlings garden a better educational tool for the Summer Science Program’s younger children, we have made information cards. The plants are pictured in bloom, along with their common names, scientific names, bloom times, and interesting facts. The cards are on stakes that can be put in the ground to identify the plants in the summer. Earthlings is grateful to Project GREEEN for the grant which purchased the native plants, and one way the garden can “pay it forward” is through education.

Project GREEEN Funds Native Plants for KAMSC's Garden!
Earthlings added native plants to the KAMSC garden this June.
KAMSC Earthlings applied for and received a generous grant from Michigan State University's Project GREEEN (Generating Research and Extension to meet Economic and Environmental Needs). This grant funds a large quantity of native plants for our KAMSC garden (in addition to providing plants for a KAMSC research project on rooftop agriculture.) The native garden plants include wild clematis, prairie phlox, black-eyed Susan, purple coneflower, and blue wood aster. These plants will attract butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and moths and will bloom at staggered times during the year. The increased biodiversity can provide a hands-on learning station for KAMSC's science programs, both during the summer camps for younger children and throughout the school year. Thank you, Project GREEEN!
Below are pictures of the mature native plants funded for our KAMSC garden:

Grounds Improvement Initiative - Completed October 21, 2012
Our grounds improvement initiative was completed today with a major overhaul to the garden area near the student parking lot along Pearl Street. Mums are blooming now, and next year we should see iris, creeping myrtle, hostas, and daylilies.
Crabgrass and weeds were removed, and enriched soil was added from Ms. Hach's AP Environmental Science class. The stone edging was salvaged and reset. All of the perennials were donated. Now both KAMSC and its neighbors and passersby along Pearl Street can enjoy the improved garden area!

June 2012
KAMSC Earthlings will be branching out this fall! Our focus over the past years has been on our recycling project, and we will be continuing with that important effort, but Earthlings will be expanding its scope. Beginning in September, we will be working on a grounds improvement project during Wednesday's Open Lab to beautify the KAMSC exterior with low-maintenance ground covers and perennials. We will also be working towards energy conservation and potential participation in the Envirothon. Meeting times will be posted on this website once the school calendar is finalized for the year.
